“A single rose can be my garden...a single friend, my world”, Leo Buscaglia.

Whether as a first gesture or as an ultimate one, personally giving someone a rose is by no means a simple or innocent expression. Behind that thoughtful act is often a hidden meaning. During this month of love where hearts leap far and wide and flowers travel in all directions, it is but the rose that climbs to the top of the popularity tree and moves forward towards the window display of every colorful flower shop. Through its symbolic nature and its mesmerizing color, it will have and convey its own language; Red, a testimony of love and romance – pink, an expression of admiration and gratitude – white, a symbol of innocence and purity - yellow, a token of friendship and joy- and orange, a show of passion and desire. With all these different colors and meanings, you best choose wisely; for the last thing you want is to be misunderstood! Flowers should adorn the inside of every home. Who was it that suddenly decided that flowers were only for significant others, companions and spouses? What about the people we love and value, the ones that surround and support us, those that deserve goodness and the others that are alone? Should they not receive flowers as well? It’s settled then, this year on Valentine’s Day, everyone should and will get flowers.

During the winter months, indoor plants face several obstacles that can lead them to weaken or even perish.

- The first of such problems is the lack of sunlight. You can help them live longer by bringing them closer to a window; but first, make sure that your plant does indeed like or need the sun. Should you begin to see the leaves turning yellow, it does not necessarily mean that your plant needs water; it can be that it simply needs light. Either way, make sure you do something about it.

- The second plant dilemma is the strong heat that is often emitted by radiators. In order not to suffocate your plants, we suggest a temperature that is anywhere around 18 degrees Celsius. However, these precautions do not exempt the fact that you still need to water them once a week.

It is far from being a mere coincidence that 90% of women that are interviewed say they absolutely love receiving flowers.

The Chorisia speciosa

Also known as the Floss-Silk Tree, the Chorisia speciosa is a deciduous and fast-growing tree that is native to Brazil and Argentina but that is now grown in many tropical zones around the world...

During this romantic month of February, you should be extra attentive towards plants on terraces or balconies, especially those that are in plastic pots.

Pots made out of Terracota (clay) tend to isolate better. As a precaution, place your plants in an area that has ample sunlight and slightly elevate them from the ground with either planks or Styrofoam. Covering them with a tarp is also beneficial. As for your jardinières (planters), you can cover them with newspaper.

Her majesty the rose!

It is an indisputable fact that the rose is the gift of choice for the ever-so romantic Valentine’s Day.

What is more, it also enjoys the privilege of being crowned ‘queen of flowers’ as it is unanimously considered as the world’s favorite blossom, regardless of the occasion. Revered as the ultimate expression of love and romance, its universal symbolism dates all the way back to the dawn of time. Cultivated not only for its radiance, but also for its therapeutic virtues and its pleasing scent, the rose, unmatched, stands alone on a pedestal in the kingdom of flowers. Ovid, Pliny the Elder and Dioscorides all cited it in their treatises whereas Arabic medicine relied heavily on its healing oils.
In alchemy, the rose symbolizes mystic or divine love. Its first distillation into oil and water is attributed to 10th century alchemist, Ibn Sina, also known by the name Avicenna. In cosmetology, the incomparable multi-faceted fragrances of the red rose make it one of the most precious and expensive perfumes. It takes about 30 flowers to form one drop.
The rose is everywhere; in dermal creams, shaving creams, lipsticks, moisturizers and perfumes. The Rosa Damascena, more commonly known as the Damask Rose, is one of the most refreshing and finest cosmetic ingredients. In aromatherapy treatments, it is applied to soothe the senses and skin. Moreover, it is used as a tonic for mature skin as well as to treat depression and sadness.

Aloe Vera is nothing new and is one of the oldest and most popular medicinal plants known to man.

Egyptian Queens’ Cleopatra and Nefertiti both praised Aloe Vera as being their most important beauty secrets and Alexander the Great himself carried the plant into battle to treat wounded soldiers.
Sold in the form of gel caps, moisturizers, make-ups, ointments, shampoos and even yoghurts, Aloe Vera’s ‘first aid’ miracles never seem to cease.
This plant releases oxygen and absorbs carbon dioxide at night. For this reason, it is ideal for the home and even the bedroom for a good night’s sleep. This is a long-lasting plant that will benefit from a spell outdoors in a sunny, protected spot during the summer months.

Whether you are an avid gardener or a simple ‘plant lover’, it is best to have the necessary quality gardening tools stashed somewhere safe and out of humidity’s and harm’s way.
Continuous care and proper cleaning (for excessive dirt causes metal to rust) is also essential if you want them to do the trick and simplify your overall experience.
